Where Should a Business Coach Advertise?

Why the advisers an owner already trusts matter more than any advertising channel available to you.

Business Coach: Where Should a Business Coach Advertise

Here is the fact that should govern every channel decision in this vertical, and almost no coaching marketing accounts for it.

Business owners do not wake up and search for a business coach. They hit a ceiling, get frustrated, and complain to the person closest to their numbers.

So the question is not which channel converts. It is where those conversations already happen, and whether you are present in them when they do.

Here is the order that follows from that.

See where your marketing is leaking customers.
See where your marketing is leaking customers.

The advisers who hear the problem first

Accountants, bookkeepers, fractional CFOs and attorneys are the strongest referral source available to a business coach, and almost nobody works them deliberately.

The reason is timing. An accountant sees the numbers and hears the frustration months before the owner decides to act on it. They are present at the moment the problem becomes conscious, which is earlier than any marketing channel can reach.

What builds the relationship:

  • Be specific about who you serve, including who you do not. An accountant who does not know your niche will send you whoever complains loudest, which is usually their least coachable client.
  • Give first. Send them a client, or do something substantive on a shared one.
  • Solve a problem they have. They field operational and strategic questions they are not paid to answer and do not want.
  • Close the loop the day a referral arrives, and report the outcome.

Three relationships worked properly beat twenty maintained loosely. Expect months.

Speaking to rooms of owners

Industry associations, chambers of commerce, trade groups and owner networks gather your exact buyer in one room, which is difficult to achieve any other way.

The rule is simple: speak about a problem, not about coaching.

An hour explaining why a profitable business runs out of cash reaches owners currently living that. An hour on the value of coaching reaches nobody, and organizers notice which sessions people stay for.

This compounds better than most channels, because organizers rebook speakers who were useful and the same associations run events repeatedly.

Practical notes. Ask for the attendee list or offer something that requires an email to collect. Follow up within two days while the session is fresh. And pick groups whose members match your business type and stage rather than accepting any room.

Peer groups, as partners rather than competitors

Most coaches treat peer group organizers as competition. They are one of the better referral sources available.

A peer group provides accountability and perspective from other owners. Coaching provides dedicated attention to one business, with continuity between sessions. They solve different problems and many owners use both.

Group organizers regularly meet owners who need individual work the format cannot provide: someone with a situation too specific for the room, or too sensitive to discuss in front of peers.

Introduce yourself, be clear about the business type and stage you serve, and be explicit that you are not trying to pull members out of the group. Offering to speak to a group once is a natural way to start.

One or two organizer relationships can produce a steady trickle of well-qualified enquiries.

LinkedIn, concretely rather than motivationally

Owners scroll past encouragement. They have seen every variation of mindset content and none of it changed anything in their business.

What stops them is a post that names something they are currently living with and explains the mechanism.

Why a profitable business runs out of cash. What breaks first when a team goes from five to twelve. Why the owner becomes the bottleneck and what actually removes them. What changes when the first manager is hired.

Diagnosis works better than prescription here, because explaining what usually causes a symptom is credible while prescribing a fix to a business you have not seen is not.

Two substantive posts a week, written in batches and scheduled. A feed that stops for a month undermines the credibility it was built for.

Past clients and the owners they know

Owners talk to other owners constantly. It is one of the defining features of the audience, and it makes past clients unusually productive as a referral source.

Ask specifically rather than generally, and name the business type you want more of. Do you know another contractor at about your size who is stuck on the same thing produces names. Keep me in mind produces a nod.

Ask at a moment of visible progress rather than at the end of an engagement, because business change is gradual and the best moment is when something has just worked.

Stay in touch afterwards. An owner you coached through a growth stage will hit the next ceiling in two years, and will also have met a dozen owners in the meantime.

Paid advertising, narrow and last

Advertising into business coaching as a category is expensive and largely ineffective, for the reason at the top of this guide. The demand you are bidding on is mostly other coaches researching, and owners searching the term are usually comparison shopping rather than discovering.

If you test it, aim at a business type and a problem rather than at coaching. A campaign targeting owners of a specific business type facing a specific constraint, pointed at a page written for exactly them, is a different proposition entirely.

Measure enquiries that become engagements rather than clicks or form fills, and only run it once the website publishes structure and pricing.

What to skip: broad category advertising, coach directories, lead services selling coaching enquiries, and anything that cannot tell you where an enquiry originated.

Build three adviser relationships. Book one speaking slot with a room of owners. Treat peer group organizers as partners. Post concretely on one problem your target stage faces. Ask past clients specifically.

Then consider advertising, narrowly. Owners do not go looking for coaches, so the whole job is being present where they are already complaining.

Action Plan

  1. Write a one-page description of the business you serve and who you are not right for.
  2. Identify three accountants or fractional CFOs serving that business type.
  3. Send each one something genuinely useful before asking for anything.
  4. Book one speaking slot with a local owner group this quarter, on a problem rather than on coaching.
  5. Introduce yourself to one peer group organizer.
  6. Publish twice weekly on one specific problem your target stage faces.
  7. Ask two past clients for a referral, naming the business type you want.
  8. Only test paid advertising once your site publishes structure and pricing.
