The tax business has a structural problem. Enormous revenue in a short window, then months of quiet, and a client who has no reason to think about you until next January.
That concentration makes revenue fragile, makes hiring hard, and makes every client easy to poach.
Fixing it is mostly about what you say in the ten minutes after you deliver a return.
When you hand over a completed return, the client is relieved and paying attention. It is the only moment all year when they are thinking about their taxes voluntarily.
That is when you say what could have been done differently with more notice, and offer the conversation that prevents it next year.
Almost nobody does this, which is why almost every tax client is a one-off.
Everything you wish the client had done, they could have done, if anyone had spoken to them in July.

"Let me know if you need anything" produces nothing.
A defined offer works: a mid-year planning session, at a set price, with a stated agenda. Something a client can say yes to without wondering what they are buying.
For self-employed and business clients, estimated payments already create four contact points a year.
Turning that from a reminder into a short review conversation makes the relationship continuous and creates the opening for larger advisory work.
Notice response and back-filing work arrives year round and tends to be urgent, which means it is less price sensitive.
If you handle it, say so clearly on the website. People searching for help with a notice are highly motivated and often not currently anyone's client.
UNCERTAIN: representation rights differ by credential. Only advertise what you are permitted to do.
A monthly or annual package covering the return, quarterly check-ins and notice support smooths revenue and raises the lifetime value of a client considerably.
It also changes the client's behavior. People who pay monthly ask questions, and questions are where planning work comes from.
May through November is when you have time to market and no competitors doing it.
That is the window for content, referral partner building, and reaching out to last year's clients who did not return.
Have the delivery conversation. Offer planning as a defined product. Use quarterly estimates as a bridge. Take notice work. Package the year.
The goal is a practice where January is busy and August is not empty.
