Accounting is a referral business, and it will stay one. But firms that rely only on referrals grow at whatever rate their network happens to produce, which is rarely the rate they want.
Here is where clients actually come from and what to build alongside referrals.
Your clients talk to other business owners constantly. Most never think to mention you, because you never gave them a reason to.
Ask directly, once a year, in a specific way: do you know another contractor who is frustrated with their books?
Specific asks get referrals. General ones get nods.

Attorneys, commercial bankers, insurance brokers and financial advisors all encounter businesses needing an accountant.
Build these deliberately. One page describing exactly the client you want, a short introduction, and consistent follow-through when a referral arrives.
The firms with full books almost always have three or four of these relationships working.
"Accountant near me" and "CPA for [industry] in [city]" both produce real inquiries.
A complete Google Business Profile with reviews, plus a website naming your city and your niche, captures this. It is free and most firms neglect it.
If you serve one industry, the association, trade group or online community for that industry is worth more than any advertising channel.
Speaking, writing for their newsletter, or simply being present produces better clients than paid search ever will.
Professional directories generate inquiries, though often price-sensitive ones.
Worth a complete listing. Not worth building a growth plan around, unless your positioning is explicitly low cost.
Accounting keywords are expensive because the client value is high.
If you test, target the niche: "CPA for dental practices," not "accountant." Point the ad at a page written for that reader. Broad campaigns burn budget quickly.
Referrals first and worked deliberately, local search second, niche communities third, paid last and narrow.
Most firms do the first accidentally and skip the rest.
