Should tree services offer free estimates?

Free estimates are the standard in tree work and usually necessary, because pricing depends on conditions that genuinely have to be assessed. Proximity, access and structural condition cannot be judged from a description.

The problem is the cost of the visit. An hour of driving and assessment for a job that may never book is real overhead, and in a trade with high job values the temptation is to visit everything.

Two things make free estimates sustainable:

• Accept photos with the quote request. This is the most effective filter available. Two or three pictures and a short description let you give a ballpark, gauge seriousness, and decide which visits to make first. Some jobs can be priced accurately enough without a visit at all.
• Batch visits geographically. Group estimates into a route rather than driving out individually, which is also how the neighborhood clustering advantage compounds.

For very large or complex assessments, particularly where a written arborist report or preservation advice is involved, charging for the assessment is reasonable and common. That is consulting work rather than a sales visit.

Whichever approach you take, state it clearly on the website so nobody hesitates over whether the visit costs anything.
